United Nations General Assembly Committee

Topic Area: Global Standards for Social Media and Misinformation

Committee Directors: Ragul Pradeepan & Arun Tiwari

Committee Type: General Assembly

Language: English

Level: Beginner/Intermediate

In an era where information travels faster than truth, the world faces an unprecedented challenge: balancing freedom of expression with the need for accountability online. Governments around the world are tightening control over social media, but where does regulation end and censorship begin? At the same time, social media is revolutionizing political discourse in ways never before seen. With some nations creating legal punishments over the online space, to others demanding platform compliance with government authority, the global community stands divided. The question remains: how much power should states wield over digital spaces? Better yet, can online domains be legally regulated? Delegates must decide whether freedom can survive in an age of regulation or whether control will define the digital future.

United Nations Council on the Immortality Initiative

Topic Area: Human Immortality

Committee Directors: Vincent Chu & Tanish Mittal

Committee Type: General Assembly with Crisis Elements

Language: English

Level: Beginner/Intermediate

Eternal life, one of the dreams humanity has envisioned since its conception, has finally been achieved in secret by an international co-operative. Somehow, this knowledge has remained completely confidential, with only a handful of world leaders and delegations being aware of its completion.

The issue at hand, of course, is the path forward. While immortality itself has been achieved, this committee must now decide its implementation into society. Overpopulation, resource collapse, economic upheaval, and the unravelling of faith, ethics, and humanity itself now loom closer than ever. However, keeping the drug a secret for any longer could result in millions more needless, permanent deaths. Who deserves immortality, if anyone at all? You will have to solve problems that stumped philosophers from Aristotle to Marx, with your resolutions deciding not just the fate of countries or political parties, but the very nature of being human as we know it.

United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues

Topic Area: Healthcare Inequality in Indigenous Communities

Committee Director: Aria Williams

Committee Type: Economic and Social Council

Language: Bilingual

Level: Beginner

Healthcare systems around the world have struggled for centuries now when it comes to providing an adequate level of care when treating members of Indigenous groups. Whether it be disproportionately poor health outcomes, a lack of respect for traditional healing practices, or a complete lack of healthcare facilities in rural communities, there are countless ways indigenous peoples are marginalized by their respective governments. Countless politicians and bureaucrats have either struggled or neglected to find healthier and more respectful ways of treating indigenous peoples, due in part to the fact that many of said healthcare systems are built on foundations of forced assimilation, colonialism, and genocide. Delegates will have to confront the legacies of these issues head-on, and consider how they affect our contemporary world, all while keeping in mind the variance of the issues faced by the massively varied and culturally diverse indigenous groups that live across the world.

Star Trek Crisis

Committee Directors: Samson Friedman & James Friedman

Committee Type: Specialized Agency

Language: English

Level: Intermediate

This crisis committee takes CAPMUN beyond the stars aboard The USS Resilience, a Luna-class starship tasked with conducting a diplomatic mission on behalf of Starfleet. Committee members will join the Resilience’s bridge crew as officers, each responsible for a portion of the ship's system and crew. Throughout the committee, delegates will face challenges that can only be solved through creative use of the source material, cooperation, and skillful utilization of the ship's limited resources. Although Star Trek is a vast universe with a dedicated fanbase, the committee directors are committed to presenting the material in an understandable fashion, with a focus on teamwork and cooperation. From conflicts aboard the ship to making first contact with a potentially hostile undiscovered species, the captain and crew will be thoroughly challenged during this rewarding interstellar crisis committee.

International Court of Justice

Topic Area: Pokémon Trainers V. Team Rocket

Committee Director: Stephanie Magistrado

Committee Type: Specialized Agency

Language: Bilingual

Level: Intermediate

For years, Team Rocket has utilized Pokémon and exploited them for profit and to gain power. Originating in the Kanto Region, Team Rocket’s primary operations include stealing Pokémon, experimentation on Pokémon and the sale of Pokémon for profit. The trafficking and experimentation of Pokémon not only disrupts the various ecosystems where Pokémon reside but also violates the rights of Pokémon and their trainers. Team Rocket’s actions have sparked a debate and concerns over Pokémon's welfare, and whether Pokémon have individual rights.

In this Committee, the International Court of Justice will discuss whether Team Rocket’s crimes break international law and what legal action should be taken. Delegates will be sure to uphold due process while considering the impacts on Pokémon welfare. Only in a world where justice is served, peace and balance will be restored within the Pokémon regions.

Fate of the Shogunate

Committee Directors: Berkay Ertugrul & Mustafa Aswad

Committee Type: Specialized Agency, Joint Crisis Committee

Language: English

Level: Advanced

For too long, our land has been divided. The Emperor sits on the Chrysanthemum Throne, while real power lies with the Shogun. The Ōnin War shattered peace, and a decade of ruin has followed. The Ashikaga Shogun's banners and the standards of rival houses are soaked with blood, and no one knows when the fighting will end.

You are a Daimyō: head of a noble house, keeper of honour, steward of soldiers and rice stores. The fate of your clan and the nation itself rests on your choices.

Aid the Ashikaga Shogun, who offers rank and riches to defend his rule. Align with the Daijō-daijin, the Chancellor, who claims the Emperor’s will is to restore the throne and end the shogunate. Or reach higher still, for Kyoto itself. Rule as Shogun, by strength and cunning alike.

This age favours those who read loyalties like weather. One betrayal, one misstep, and your house may fall by blade or bargain. Will you uphold the Ashikaga, lift the Emperor, or seize the future for yourself?

The war rages. The courtiers whisper. The people pray. The fate is yours to seize.

In this committee, delegates will assume the roles of the Aldermen and Lord Mayor of the City of London during two of the most perilous and tumultuous years in that city’s long history. Will they pull together to lead their community through these challenging times, or will they come asunder?

The decisions you make will reshape the destiny of over 400 million people.

Crisis never sleeps. Neither should you.
